Pakistan’s National Day Reception held in Colombo
Pakistan High Commission, Colombo celebrated the National Day of Pakistan at a hotel. Honorable Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Trade, Sri Lanka graced the event as Chief Guest. Ministers of the Government of Sri Lanka, Members of Parliament, General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratna, Secretary Defence, General Shavendra Silva, Army Commander, Air Vice Marshal Sudharshana Pathirana Air Force Commander Sri Lanka and distinguished representatives of the diplomatic community and international organization in Sri Lanka, Senior Civil and Military officials of the Government of Sri Lanka, Pakistani community and friends of Pakistan from Sri Lanka were also present amongst the guests.
H.E. Major General (Retd) Umar Farooq Burki (HI) M, while addressing the audience highlighted the significance of celebrating 23rd March as National Day of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Pakistan High Commissioner also shed light on the centuries old relationship dating back to the golden era of Gandhara and Buddhism between the people of the two countries.
H.E proudly mentioned in his address that the relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka stand firm supporting each other. Strengthening Bilateral Trade and Investment between Pakistan and Sri Lanka remains a top priority, amongst other important aspects in the agenda of the Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka.
H.E. Major General (Retd) Umar Farooq Burki (HI) M, also mentioned the Educational Scholarships that Pakistan Government is offering to Sri Lankan students with the capital cost of approximately US$ 18.402 million, through which a number of Sri Lankan Students are benefiting each year in different institutions of Pakistan.
A documentary showcasing the landscapes, business potential, historical footprint and culture of Pakistan was displayed for the guests. An exhibition showcasing the handicrafts of talented people of Pakistan was also part of the event. The respectable guests showed particular interest in the hand-carved/painted wooden items that are specialty of Silanwali, a small city of Pakistan. The event ended with a sumptuous dinner which was preceded by cake cutting ceremony.
