Senate passes Contempt of Court Bill 2012

Earlier‚ taking part in the debate on the Bill‚ Leader of the Opposition in the House‚ Ishaq Dar said it is a malafide attempt and amounts to lowering the prestige of the Parliament.
Haji Adeel said it is the question of supremacy and sovereignty of the Parliament. He said judiciary too committed mistakes in the past and who will penalize it.
Mushahid Hussain Syed said the government should learn lesson from the past and must not make person-specific legislation. He said we should avoid any kind of confrontation with any institution.
Mir Hasil Bizenjo said they supported PPP when it introduced 18th Amendment but cannot support a flawed legislation. He said it is duty of the Supreme Court to ensure rule of law.
Muzaffar Hussain Shah said the contempt of court law is necessary to remove drawbacks of the existing law.
Farhatullah Babar said the legislation is not being done in haste but it is need of the hour.
Aitzaz Ahsan and Raza Rabbani of Pakistan People’s Party also expressed their views over the Bill.
Raza Rabbani said that the current situation of the country demanded political as well as judicial maturity.
Law Minister Farooq H. Naek said that the constitution gives the parliament right to legislate. He said we are not against the judiciary but respect the constitution.
PML-N senators staged a walkout against the bill in protest.
