The High Commission of Pakistan organized an event to highlight the devastations caused by the recent floods and to show solidarity with the flood affectees in Pakistan. Members of Sri Lankan business community, Pakistani community and friends of Pakistan attended the event at the Pakistan High Commission.
Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Sri Lanka, Maj. Gen (Retd) Umar Farooq Burki HI (M) said we all share our heartfelt sympathies and stand in solidarity with the people and Government of Pakistan at this time of great difficulty, as the country faces its worst natural catastrophe. Since the start of the monsoon season, Pakistan has received unprecedented monsoon rainfall within the first three weeks only. Heavy rains have caused urban and flash floods, landslides, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) throughout Pakistan.
As per latest report from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan, a large number of Pakistanis have lost their lives due to the floods, hundreds & thousands of livestock have been lost. Overall 81 Districts have been severely affected so far and more than 33 million people in Pakistan have been affected by the deadly floods. A large amount of infrastructure has been completely washed away as almost one-third of the country remains under water.
The government of Pakistan has established a relief fund in which people from overseas as well as Pakistan can donate to the flood relief efforts. Smallest of help would bring an immense support in the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.
The High Commissioner also thanked the President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Ranil Wickramasinghe, Hon. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane, Hon. Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Ali Sabry and Hon. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa for reaching out to the Pakistani people and government during this unprecedented crisis.
